My name is Melissa King, and I am a third-year Advertising student in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. That’s a mouthful! 🙂 I am also minoring in Speech Communications.

I am currently serving as the President of University Union, the student programming board. This is the most rewarding role I’ve had thus far because University Union was the first organization I joined when I started college at UGA in fall 2007. This organization has definitely made my college experience worthwhile. The singers, comedians, speakers, etc. that I’ve met through University Union, the friends I’ve made in the organization, and the opportunities I’ve had within it have all had a hand in shaping me into the person I am today.

Of course I didn’t just step in as President, I worked my way through the ranks.  In spring 2008, I applied to and became an Advertising Co-Chair of the Promotions Committee for the 2008 calendar year. It was during this year that I discovered that my passion for graphic design outweighed my love for writing, and therefore, I changed my major from Public Relations to Advertising. In spring 2009, I became the Promotions Director for University Union. During this time, I implemented the use of social media, such as Twitter and Tumblr, into the PR/Advertising efforts of the organization.

Throughout my college career, I’ve also been part of several other organizations. I was a member of the ugaMiracle’s Committee for Outreach and Service from fall 2007 to spring 2009. I plan on participating in the organization again in the fall because not being on it this year made me realize how much I miss it! UgaMiracle is a student-run campus philanthropy benefitting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

I am a member of UGA AdClub, and I recently applied to be on the Executive Board. I’ll update you on that when I find out.

Last but definitely not least, I attended UGA LeaderShape 2009. This was an amazing, life-enhancing experience. I made some of the greatest friends and learned a lot about myself. I learned the importance of living and leading with integrity, among other lessons, and try to apply them to my daily life. I could try to explain to you the amazingness of LeaderShape, but it’s too difficult to put into words. It is something you have to experience to fully understand. If you are lucky enough to get a chance to experience it, you must “Trust the process” and “Participate don’t anticipate.”

Well, those are the organizations that have helped make my college experience phenomenal and have helped shape me into the leader and person I am today.

Now for a few more random facts about me:

Blue is my favorite color. I love photography. I am a student of life. I love meeting new people. This is my third attempt at keeping up with a blog. (Hopefully I succeed; third times the charm, right?!) And I am proud to be a Georgia Bulldog!
